Characteristics

The Platycerium bifurcatum, also known as a Staghorn Fern, is a distinctive epiphytic species that produces leathery, forked fronds resembling the horns of a stag and are covered in a velvety covering of white hairs. This mounted variety hangs perfectly on a wall that gets plenty of bright, indirect light.

How to Care for Mounted Staghorn Ferns

  • Light: Bright indirect light. Direct light will burn this plant.
  • Water Preferences: This epiphytic plant absorbs water as readily through the leaves as it does the roots and loves to be misted frequently. Keep soil evenly moist. To water your mounted Staghorn fern thoroughly, submerge it in water.
  • Special Care/Notes: The perfect balance of water for this plant might be tricky to find, as it is sensitive to over and underwatering. Once the shield front emerges from the base of the plant, do not, under any circumstances remove it. Even if it’s brown, let another one grow back before removing the old one.

"No matter what I am at Bath for, there are always helpful employees to help me find what I need or tips on how to care for indoor or outdoor plants. They also carry pots, trellises, soil, and interesting plants of all kinds! I was also pleasantly surprised to find compost worms available for purchase without a special preorder. Thank you for being awesome!"
