Autumn Ferns, also known as Japanese Shield Ferns or Japanese Wood Ferns (Dryopteris erythrosora), bring a touch of seasonal color to your houseplants year-round. Unlike most ferns, Autumn Ferns boast a stunning color display throughout the seasons. New fronds emerge in spring with a coppery-red or orange-red hue, giving the plant its name. This fiery color transitions to a bright, glossy green in summer. Then, come fall, the fronds transform once again, turning a beautiful bronze color.

How to Care for Autumn Ferns

• Light: Indirect medium light. Too much light will cause the plant's leaves to dry out and turn brown.
• Water Preferences: Keep soil evenly and consistently moist. These ferns prefer light, fast-draining soil. Consider amending potting soil with perlite.
• Special Care/Notes: Plants that like ample and consistent moisture need soil that can drain and retain enough moisture to stay moist, but not waterlogged. A top-dressing of bark can help increase humidity around the plant without increasing watering frequency.
