High Mowing Cherokee Purple Tomato Seeds

Large beefsteak fruits with mauve-purple skin, green shoulders and red flesh. The most popular of the "black" tomatoes for its outstanding flavor and texture. Widely grown by gardeners and market growers alike. A popular heirloom for the greenhouse. Believed to trace back over 100 years to the Cherokee tribe.

Sowing Information:

  • Light: Full sun
  • When to Start Inside: Start seeds 6-8 weeks before planting date. Do not start too early; transplants will suffer if allowed to become root bound and leggy. Harden off transplants by reducing water and nitrogen fertilizer.
  • When to Sow Outside: Transplant outdoors after danger of frost has passed.
  • Seed Depth: Plant seeds ¼ inch deep
  • Seed Spacing: Plant 12-18 inches apart
  • Row Spacing: 24-26 inches
  • Thinning: When 3 inches tall, thin to 1 every 4 inches
  • Days to Germinate: 7-15 days
  • Days to Maturity: 72 days

Growing Notes:

  • Harvesting: Harvest tomatoes fully ripe for best flavor. Tomatoes can also be harvested green or at first blush and ripened off the vine at temperatures above 70°F.
  • Attributes: Indeterminate, open-pollinated, heirloom tomato
