Botanical Interests Chef's Choice Mesclun Lettuce Seeds

This beautiful, texture-filled salad blend is easy to grow, and scrumptious to eat! Good container mix. Varieties include: LETTUCES: 'Tango' 10%, 'Royal Oak Leaf' 10%, 'Red Salad Bowl' 25%, 'Red Sails' 5%, 'Black Seeded Simpson' 10%, 'Grand Rapids TBR' 10%. OTHER GREENS: arugula 20%, green endive 5%, mizuna mustard 5%.

Sowing Information:

  • Light: Full sun to part shade, at least 5-6 hours of sun per day
  • When to Start Inside: 4 to 6 weeks before average last frost date, and in the summer when soil temperatures are to warm (above 80°F) to germinate lettuce seed.
  • When to Sow Outside: RECOMMENDED. 2 to 4 weeks before your average last frost date, and when soil temperature is at least 40°F, ideally 60°–70°F. Successive Sowings: Every 3 weeks until 2 weeks before your average first fall frost date. Mild Climates: Sow in fall and winter for cool season harvests.
  • Seed Depth: Surface to 1/8th inch
  • Seed Spacing: Broadcast about ½ inch apart
  • Thinning: Not required for baby greens
  • Days to Germinate: 5-14 days
  • Days to Maturity: 21-45 days

Growing Notes:

  • Harvesting: Harvest leaves with scissors 2" above the soil surface. Mesclun will regrow and provide 2–3 harvests, although the first harvest is usually the best. If you wish to harvest mature heads, cut off at 2" above ground level as soon as possible after head forms; new leaves will grow form the center. The earlier the harvest, the more tender the crop.
  • Variety Info: LEAF LETTUCES: 'TANGO': Deep green, serrated leaves, mildly tangy.
'ROYAL OAK LEAF': Medium green, deeply lobed, oak leaf shaped leaves, mild flavor.
'RED SALAD BOWL': Deeply lobed, green and bronze/red leaves.
'RED SAILS': Dark red, crinkled leaves with frilly edges, an All-America Selections winner.
'BLACK SEEDED SIMPSON': Crinkled, light green, crisp leaves with frilly edges.
'GRAND RAPIDS TBR': Medium green, curled leaves with frilled edges.
OTHER GREENS: ARUGULA (rocket salad): Soft, medium green deeply lobed leaves, rich and peppery with a hint of nut. GREEN ENDIVE: Finely-cut leaves with mild overall flavor ending in a slight tang. MIZUNA MUSTARD: Thin, serrated, light green leaves, slightly peppery, mildly spicy.
  • Attributes: Good for containers, frost tolerant

"Best plants locally!"

- Jimmy James, July 2023

"We loved seeing the reindeer!! What a neat store inside too!!! The tropical part water pond was really cool."

- Chels Gonzales, January 2023

"Every time I've gone into this place has been a lovely time. Their plant selection is terrific, with beautiful sculptures and even turtles hanging out! Took a class with Evan today and made bookmarks, I plan on coming back to take more classes."

- Alex Dolce, June 2025

"I love this place. Their customer service is absolutely outstanding. The staff has a great amount of knowledge. Anytime I have an issue with a plant, I pluck a leaf off of it put it in a ziplock bag, and then take it in. The staff easily assesses what the issues are and educates me on how to tackle the issue."
