EcoBran Grasshopper Bait is an insecticidal bait primarily used for controlling grasshopper populations, but it is also effective against other chewing insects like locusts, Mormon crickets, cutworms, mole crickets, sow bugs, ants (excluding carpenter, fire, harvester, and pharaoh ants), and certain beetles.
Active Ingredient: The core of EcoBran's effectiveness lies in Carbaryl (2%), an insecticide belonging to the carbamate class. Carbaryl works by disrupting nerve transmissions in insects when ingested, leading to their demise.
Bait Formulation: The carbaryl is infused into wheat bran, which acts as an attractant and carrier. Grasshoppers and other target insects are drawn to the bait and consume it as they forage.
Targeted Action (Non-Contact Product): A significant advantage of EcoBran is its targeted approach. The insecticide is effective only when ingested by the insect. This greatly reduces harm to non-chewing insects, beneficial insects (like bees), and birds, as they are not affected by touching the bait.
Environmental Responsibility: By delivering the active ingredient directly to the pest through ingestion, EcoBran aims to reduce the overall chemical load in the environment compared to broad-spectrum liquid sprays. It can reduce the percentage of chemical used by up to 98% by weight compared to liquid applications.
Application: EcoBran is typically spread evenly across affected areas, such as field edges, along fences, or in areas with high grasshopper concentrations. It is often recommended to apply it when grasshoppers are young (third-instar) and actively foraging, as they are more susceptible.
Safety: EcoBran carries an EPA signal word of "CAUTION/PRECAUCION," indicating moderate toxicity. Users are advised to wear gloves and follow label instructions. While generally considered safer for pets and beneficial wildlife than broadcast sprays due to its ingestion-only mechanism, caution is still advised, especially with pets that might consume such materials.
