Characteristics

Araucaria heterophylla, more commonly known as Norfolk Pines, are not actually pine trees but rather a subtropical evergreen. They have tall and straight trunks that are aesthetically pleasing, and their leaves resemble pine needles. These houseplants are often seen decorated as Christmas trees during the holiday season! Be careful not to overload the tree with decorations though. Their branches are not as strong as a normal Christmas tree and too much weight could damage the plant.

How to Care for Norfolk Pines

  • Light: Prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade.
  • Water Preferences: These plants are somewhat drought tolerant. Water thoroughly until water drains out the bottom of your container, then allow the top couple inches of soil to dry out before watering additionally.
  • Special Care/Notes: Norfolk Pines love acidic soil, so amending your potting mix with peat moss will make your tree very happy as the soil will become more acidic as the peat moss in the soil breaks down over time.
