Lake Valley Heirloom Chives Seeds

A popular culinary herb with hollow leaves and mild onion flavor. Easy to grow, very hardy, require little maintenance, tolerate drought, and come back year after year. Pale purple flowers emerge in early spring, and both flowers and leaves can be used raw in salad and to flavor vinegars.

Sowing Information:

  • Light: Full sun to part shade
  • When to Start Inside: 4 to 6 weeks before your average last frost date, when soil temperature is at least 45°F, ideally 60°–70°F; or as late as 2 months before your average first fall frost date.
  • When to Sow Outside: 6 to 8 weeks before your average last frost date.
  • Seed Depth: 1/8 inch
  • Seed Spacing: A group of 10 seeds every 8 inches
  • Thinning: Not required
  • Days to Germinate: 7-21 days
  • Days to Maturity: 45 days

Growing Notes:

  • Variety Info: Bright green, slender, hollow leaves with a mild onion flavor; pinkish-purple pom-pom flowers appear in late spring to early summer. Once you plant chives in your garden, chances are you'll always have them.
  • Harvesting: Harvest lightly the first season to give the plants a chance to develop. Cut leaves at about 1″ from the ground as needed. New shoots will grow from the base of the plant.
