Botanical Interests Atomic Red Carrot Seeds

Atomic Red' is an 8"-10" long, crisp, sweet imperator-type root. When you steam, roast, or stir-fry it, the contrast between the brilliant, deep red outer layer and orange core intensifies. Grow successive crops every 3 weeks to ensure continuous harvests as this colorful carrot is sure to be in high demand once it is seen and tasted.

Sowing Information:

  • Light: Full sun
  • When to Start Inside: Not recommended; root disturbance stunts growth.
  • When to Sow Outside: RECOMMENDED. Sow 2-4 weeks before the last frost when the soil temperature is at least 45Β°F, ideally 60°–85Β°F. Successive Sowings: Every 3 weeks until 10 to 12 weeks before your average first fall frost date.
  • Seed Depth: Plant seeds ¼” deep.
  • Seed Spacing: Space seeds every 1” with rows 6” apart.
  • Thinning: Thin to one plant every 3” when seedlings are 1” tall.
  • Days to Germinate: 10-25 days
  • Days to Maturity: 70-75 days

Growing Notes:

  • Harvesting: For best flavor and texture, harvest carrots any time before, and until they reach their optimal size. The peak harvest period lasts about 3 weeks, longer in the fall. Late summer-sown carrots are sweetened after having been kissed by light frost; however, harvest before soil freezes, which may destroy the crop. In USDA zone 5 or warmer, carrots can be left in the ground for storage provided they are heavily mulched; harvest as needed on days the ground is not frozen.
  • Variety Information: Tapered roots that are medium coral-red with an orange core. Outer color deepens to dark red after cooking. 'Atomic Red' is an imperator type carrot.

"They have so much fun stuff to look at even if you're not buying plants! They also have a cool deal where, if you buy the container and the plant, they'll plant it for you. There's clothes, kitchen stuff, kids stuff, books, nick snacks, etc. My mom and I go in just to hang out and look at stuff sometimes, but last time, I got this plant. It went from beautiful to MAMMOTH and beautiful. We named her Victoria."
