Red Lava Rock from Mosser Lee

Lava rock is also very popular for amending soil when it comes to cacti, succulents, and other plants that are accustomed to more rocky, desert-like environments. It is extremely permeable and holds on to very little water.

To Improve Drainage:

Plant roots can breathe properly only in well-drained soil. To prevent over-watering, layer 1-2 inches of lava rock on the bottom of your pot.

To Create Humidity:

Most plants benefit from a humid environment, and these beautiful stones can help welcome humidity to your plant.

  • Layer 1-2 inches of lava rock in a saucer, dish, or any other shallow-type container. Place planter on the rocks.
  • Add water to lava rock to a level slightly below the plant container, Re-water as needed to maintain proper level.
  • Don't forget to water your plants as well!

To Decorate:

Beautify and enhance your house plants by adding a top layer to your planters. The lava rock will add soil moisture retention.

  • Contains 1.5 dry quarts of red lava rock

"Wonderful selection!"

- NM, April 2024

"Best garden place in Fort Collins. Need one in the Springs!!"

- Michele Arthur, August 2024

"No matter what I am at Bath for, there are always helpful employees to help me find what I need or tips on how to care for indoor or outdoor plants. They also carry pots, trellises, soil, and interesting plants of all kinds! I was also pleasantly surprised to find compost worms available for purchase without a special preorder. Thank you for being awesome!"

- Erica Westcott, August 2025

"Always a good place every July/August to get Palisade’s Peaches. Colorado’s favorite."

- Marielle Phillips, July 2025
