High Mowing Organic Small Shining Light Watermelon Seeds

This watermelon is classified as an "icebox" type, meaning it produces smaller, more manageable fruits, ideal for smaller households or limited storage. The Small Shining Light watermelon has a sweet, juicy red flesh and dark green-black rind.

Sowing Information:

  • Light: Full sun
  • When to Start Inside: 4 weeks before transplanting outdoors
  • When to Sow Outside: Sow seeds outdoors in 12" diameter hills after danger of frost has passed and soil has warmed.
  • Seed Depth: Plant seeds ½ inch deep
  • Seed Spacing: Space hills 8' apart in all directions with 6-8 seeds per hill
  • Thinning: Thin to 3-4 plants per hill
  • Days to Germinate: 4-10 days
  • Days to Maturity: 80-90 days

Growing Notes:

  • Harvesting: Ripeness is determined by four methods: when the tendril nearest the fruit is dried and brown; when the ground spot has turned from white to yellow; when the blossom end of fruit becomes soft; and the ubiquitous “thump test”— fruit should sound hollow. Cut fruit cleanly from the vine to avoid stem-end rot.
  • Attributes: Round fruits grow to 10-12 inches. Early maturing, good for short seasons.

"I love this place. Their customer service is absolutely outstanding. The staff has a great amount of knowledge. Anytime I have an issue with a plant, I pluck a leaf off of it put it in a ziplock bag, and then take it in. The staff easily assesses what the issues are and educates me on how to tackle the issue."
