Botanical Interests Organic Early Jalapeño Chile Pepper Seeds

Lots of bold flavor in a small, 3" pepper, 'Early Jalapeño' is better adapted to cooler climates than other jalapeños. Incredibly versatile, they're hot enough to add a little kick to your favorite dish, but mild enough for any meal. Enjoy green or allow to ripen to red for a sweeter, bolder flavor. Jalapeños rate 2,500–5,000 Scoville heat units (medium hot).

Sowing Information:

  • Light: Full sun
  • When to Start Inside: RECOMMENDED. 8 to 10 weeks before transplanting. The ideal soil temperature for germination is 70°–90°F. Transplant seedlings outside 2 to 4 weeks after your average last frost date, and when daytime temperatures are at least 70°F, and nighttime temperatures are at least 55°F.
  • When to Sow Outside: Not recommended; transplant outside 2 to 4 weeks after average last frost, when the soil temperature is at least 70°F.
  • Seed Depth: Plant seeds ¼ inch deep
  • Seed Spacing: Start indoors
  • Thinning: Start indoors, plant seedlings 18-24 inches apart outside
  • Days to Germinate: 10-15 days
  • Days to Maturity: 60–75 days from transplanting

Growing Notes:

  • Harvesting: Harvest when mature size and firm. Jalapeños can be harvested green or red, and are hottest just when they begin to turn from green to red. When harvesting, take care to avoid touching the interior of any broken peppers, as the capsaicin is an extreme irritant, especially to the eyes. Wash hands thoroughly after harvesting or wear gloves to harvest peppers.
  • Variety Information: 3" long, 1" wide at the shoulder tapering to a rounded tip; peppers start out dark green turning to red if left to mature on the plant. Red jalapeños are slightly sweeter and spicier. The popular chipotle pepper is a dried, smoked, red jalapeño. 'Early Jalapeño' is a medium hot pepper at 2,500–5,000 Scoville heat units. Pepper heat varies depending on growing conditions. Frost sensitive and good for containers.

"They have so much fun stuff to look at even if you're not buying plants! They also have a cool deal where, if you buy the container and the plant, they'll plant it for you. There's clothes, kitchen stuff, kids stuff, books, nick snacks, etc. My mom and I go in just to hang out and look at stuff sometimes, but last time, I got this plant. It went from beautiful to MAMMOTH and beautiful. We named her Victoria."

"I love this place. Their customer service is absolutely outstanding. The staff has a great amount of knowledge. Anytime I have an issue with a plant, I pluck a leaf off of it put it in a ziplock bag, and then take it in. The staff easily assesses what the issues are and educates me on how to tackle the issue."

"Every time I've gone into this place has been a lovely time. Their plant selection is terrific, with beautiful sculptures and even turtles hanging out! Took a class with Evan today and made bookmarks, I plan on coming back to take more classes."
