Fava beans are dual-purpose! As a cover crop, fava beans have one of the highest nitrogen-fixing rates, and the large, deep roots break up even heavy clay and compacted soil. For maximum nitrogen, harvest crop at peak bloom and work back into the soil to increase level of organic material. Seeds can be sown in temperatures as low as 35°F, and plants are fast growing and very cold hardy. Fava sown after the summer solstice or in late summer/fall will produce tall plants but will not produce flowers.
"Every time I walk into Bath I’m greeted by the kindest and most helpful people! Additionally they have a fantastic selection of everything you can think of! (I’ve even bought clothing and jewelry here! It’s much more than just a nursery). Today I had the good fortune of being greeted and helped by Wyatt. I went in with absolutely no idea what to do with my garden spaces…they’re huge and overwhelming. I showed Wyatt photos of my spaces and jokingly asked Wyatt if he could just design my spaces for me….and he replied “yes!”….he took me around, asked what I liked, told me how to mix color, grasses and heights, etc…he was a wealth of info and help! I’m so grateful and I love how it all turned out! Thank you, Bath, for having great products, and a special BIG shoutout to Wyatt! You are awesome!!! (Also, Wyatt should get a bonus because I walked out with 22 perennials😂)."
