Botanical Interests Lavewa Spinach Seeds

Rich, green color on productive plants, 'Lavewa' is an open-pollinated variety that competes with hybrids for flavor, heat tolerance, and mildew resistance. Spinach is high in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and low in calories.

Sowing Information:

  • Light: Full sun
  • When to Start Inside: Not recommended; roots are sensitive to disturbance.
  • When to Sow Outside: RECOMMENDED. 4 to 6 weeks before your average last frost date, and when the soil temperature is above 40°F; ideally 50°–75°F. Successive Sowings: Every 3 weeks until 4 weeks before your average first fall frost date. If mulched, spinach can overwinter in sub-zero temperatures. Soil temperatures above 85°F halt germination.
  • Days to Emerge: 5–10 days
  • Seed Depth: ½ inch
  • Seed Spacing: A group of 3 seeds every 6 inches
  • Row Spacing: 12 inches
  • Thinning: When 1 inch tall thin to 1 every 6 inches
  • Days to Maturity: 28–45 days

Growing Notes:

  • Harvesting: Pick individual leaves from the outer edges of the plant as they become big enough to use or cut the whole plant 1 inch above the ground; new leaves will be produced. When picking individual leaves, also removing the leaf stem at the same time is best; this reduces vulnerability to disease during die-back and conserves plant energy. Harvest before the plant sends up a flower stalk (bolting). Just prior to bolting, leaves take on an "arrowhead" shape, adding small keel shapes to the base of the leaf.
  • Attributes: Good for containers, disease-resistant, heat tolerant
  • Hardiness: Frost-tolerant annual. Very cold hardy; fall-sown plants may overwinter even in climates with sub-zero temperatures.

"Love this place. I now have a lovely birdbath in my yard. Friendly staff and they are helpful too."

"What a fun and whimsical nursery. There is something for everyone. It feels like every turn you find another treasure. Pricing is boutique-like but plenty of items on the under $15 side. We went in today for greeting cards and found the perfect cards for my grandma. I've purchased many garden supplies and plants here as well. They always have great quality and variety. The owner is amazing, generous, and community focused."

"Beautiful nursery filled with the most beautiful selection and variety of anything you can think of! Trees, flowers, indoor/outdoor plants of every kind you can imagine, a wide variety of fantastic retail products and more! Very great customer service from the staff and available to help with a smile. A bit on the pricier side compared to other nurseries in the area, but also worth the money spent on quality products! Will definitely be back 😊"
