Lake Valley Maltese Cross Heirloom Seeds

This old-fashioned garden favorite was planted in Thomas Jefferson’s gardens at Monticello. Its brilliant display of round, orange-red flower heads atop tall stems lend grace to the back garden border or informal wildflower landscapes. Also called Jerusalem cross or burning love flower.

Sowing Information:

Light: Full sun to partial shade
When to Start Inside: 6 to 8 weeks before your average last frost date.
When to Sow Outside: RECOMMENDED. 1 to 2 weeks after your average last frost date, and when the soil temperature is at least 60°F. Mulch well.
Seed Depth: Press lightly into the surface. Seeds need light to germinate.
Seed Spacing: A group of 3 seeds every 12 inches
Thinning: When 1-2 inches tall, thin to 1 every 12 inches
Days to Emerge: 10-12 days
Blooms: Summer

Growing Notes:

Harvesting: For the longest vase life, harvest in the morning and cut stems just as flower buds begin to open.
Hardiness: Perennial
Attributes: Very easy to grow, drought tolerant, and deer resistant. Attracts hummingbirds and butterflies.
