Lake Valley Crenshaw Cantaloupe Melon Seeds

Crenshaw is one of the most succulent of the cantaloupe-type melons. The large 5-9 lb. melons have a spicy fragrance and sweet, salmon-orange flesh. A real summertime treat! Crenshaw melons offer a mildly sweet, subtly musky flavor that's perfect for discerning palates. Think honeydew meets cantaloupe with a hint of tropical flair.

Sowing Information:

  • Light: Full sun
  • When to Start Inside: Start indoors three weeks before last spring frost date. Do not disturb tender roots when transplanting. Water consistently.
  • When to Sow Outside: Sow outdoors in spring two weeks after last frost when soil has completely warmed.
  • Seed Spacing: 2–3 seeds per mound
  • Row Spacing: 4–6 feet apart
  • Thinning: Thin to 1 plant per mound
  • Days to Germinate: 7-15 days
  • Days to Maturity: 110 days

Growing Notes:

  • Harvesting: Harvesting at the right time is very important with melons. A ripe melon will have a pleasant, fruity aroma at the blossom end; and a crack will form on the stem right near the point of attachment (this is called the "slip stage"). In a few days, the melon will detach from the vine with little effort and pressure. If it is somewhat difficult to detach the fruit from the vine, the melon is not ready yet. Do not allow to over-ripen.
  • Hardiness: Frost-sensitive annual
  • Planting Tips: Mounds should be 4'–6' apart, sowing 2–3 melon seeds per mound. If you are growing them on a trellis, you can reduce the spacing to 2'–3' apart.
