Lake Valley Heirloom Horehound Seeds

Horehound, a member of the mint family, may not be the most glamorous herb, but it packs a punch in both appearance and usefulness. Attractive olive-green foliage on a compact bushy plant. Very hardy and drought tolerant. Makes a lovely accent plant in the flower and herb garden. Old-time cough remedy, often made into horehound candies.

Sowing Information:

  • Light: Full sun
  • When to Start Inside: May be started 6-8 weeks before transplanting. Keep soil evenly moist and well weeded while plants are young.
  • When to Sow Outside: Plant in full sun in early spring as soon as soil can be worked.
  • Seed Depth: Plant seeds ¼ inch deep
  • Seed Spacing: Sow seeds 2 inches apart or transplant seedlings two inches apart
  • Row Spacing: 12 inches
  • Thinning: Not required
  • Days to Germinate: 10-15 days
  • Days to Maturity: 75 days

Growing Notes:

  • Harvesting: Cut back by one-half after flowering to maintain bushy, neat appearance. After establishment, infrequent watering is all it needs. Too much water can harm it. Like its mint cousins, horehound can be invasive. Plant it in a container or controlled space to prevent unwanted takeover.
  • Attributes: In its second year, the plant produces clusters of tiny, white flowers nestled around the leaves. Not showy, but attractive to pollinators.

"It's so beautiful inside! They always have fun fairy 🧚‍♀️ garden items. The Christmas Open House is spectacular. They have a fun selection of clothes. There's a beautiful area to enjoy with turtles 🐢! And of course, they gave plenty of landscaping plants as well as indoor plants and items to care for them all!"

- Susan Franklin, August 2025

"I was in there today may 17th 2025 and two very lovely employees helped me out! One was a guy (cashier) other was a young woman in a hat. The guy asked if I would like the plant repotted and informed me that I needed a bigger pot for the plant to grow in. The girl walked me back to the pots and helped me pick the right size! They were very friendly and helpful they made my visit there amazing! I hope you know who I am talking about so you can give them recognition!"
