Lake Valley Waltham Butternut Heriloom Squash Seeds

Waltham Butternut features an extra-small seed cavity and a thick straight neck, and is noted for its rich, nutty, orange flesh. The rich, sweet flavor of butternut quickly became a classic and has set a high bar. Roast, bake, or purée into a soup for classic winter fare. Natural resistance to squash borers. Will produce 4-5 squash per plant and can be stored for six months or longer.

Sowing Information:

  • Light: Full Sun
  • When to Sow Outside: RECOMMENDED. 1 to 2 weeks after your average last frost date, and when soil temperature is 70°–85°F.
  • When to Start Inside: Not recommended except in very short growing seasons, 2 to 4 weeks before transplanting. Roots are sensitive to disturbance; sow in biodegradable pots that can be planted directly into the ground. Transplant when the soil temperature is at least 60°F.
  • Seed Depth: ½–1 inch
  • Seed Spacing: 2–3 seeds per mound
  • Row Spacing: 6 feet
  • Thinning: When seedlings grow 3-inch leaves, thin to 1–2 per mound.
  • Days to Germinate: 5–10 days
  • Days to Maturity: 100 days

Growing Notes:

  • Harvesting: Harvest when the squash's rind is hard enough that you can't dent it with your fingernail and before first frost. Cut stem, (don't break it off) leaving 2" of stem attached, which keeps the squash whole, leaving no opening for infection. Though fruits are hard and may seem indestructible, treat them gently; bruising can spoil squash.
  • Hardiness: Frost-sensitive annual
  • Attributes: Resists Squash Vine Borers, Long Storing

"Favorite place to buy trees and shrubs and they have a cute indoor retail gift shop! I usually buy gift cards here for teacher appreciation gifts."

- Jen Swann, November 2025

"I love this place. Their customer service is absolutely outstanding. The staff has a great amount of knowledge. Anytime I have an issue with a plant, I pluck a leaf off of it put it in a ziplock bag, and then take it in. The staff easily assesses what the issues are and educates me on how to tackle the issue."

- Jared Eckert, June 2024

"I love this garden center! I've never brought home any bugs! They have a ton of things to look at!"

- Shaunna Stone, May 2023

"Omg I love it."
